MARINE STRANDING NETWORK

In 2019, the O.A.S.I.S project was launched in Kundapura, (Karnataka) to address the growing threats faced by the marine megafauna through rescue, rehabilitation and veterinary response initiatives. Over the years, we have built a strong grassroots stranding response network consisting of fishermen, coastal community members, and frontline Forest Department staff. Strandings are reported to us through this reporting network. 

Marine megafauna such as sea turtles, cetaceans, and seabirds are increasingly impacted by threats including net entanglement, bycatch, and ingestion of marine debris. Through coordinated response and community engagement, the project aims to strengthen conservation action and improve outcomes for stranded marine wildlife. 

In collaboration with the Karnataka Forest Department, our teams have responded to over 562 strandings (March 2019 to December 2025) – both live and dead marine megafauna. The majority of the cases involve Olive Ridley, Green Sea sea turtles, as well as cetaceans such as the Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphin, Spinner Dolphin, Finless Porpoise, and Bryde’s whales, among others. The commonly observed causes for concern in these incidents include boat strikes, net entanglements, plastic and net ingestion, and drowning.

Sea Turtle Nesting

Sea turtles are keystone spieces in marine ecosystems, playing a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of our oceans. However, various developmental activities, such as the construction of sea walls, tourism pressure, bright streetlights, and attacks by feral dogs, pose significant threats to nesting turtles and newly emerged hatchlings. Through nest monitoring, we ensure that their offspring have a fighting chance of returning to the ocean is equally important.

Over the past five years, we have monitored Olive Ridley turtle nests in Kundapura, resulting in the release of more than 5,600 hatchlings into the ocean. Additionally, we have conduct training sessions for Forest Department staff focusing on the scientific management and monitoring of sea turtle nests.

Ghost Net Retrieval Project

The Karnataka Coastal Conservation Project began in 2023 to address issues related to ghost nets and fishing gear. Fishing nets such as trawl, purse seine and other monofilaments are often broken into fragments while fishing, these fragments float around the oceans destroying marine life, hence the name “Ghost Nets”. Animals may confuse these nets for prey and consume them, while other free-swimming marine megafauna may get entangled in these nets, leading to injury or death. 

To tackle this issue, we have partnered with the HCL Foundation and are actively working to prevent these nets from entering our oceans. Our approach involves collaborating with fishermen along the coastline and implementing a buyback policy for damaged nets. We have successfully collected over 3,700 kgs of damaged nets that would have otherwise ended up in the ocean. More than 40 fishermen have benefited from our buyback policy, and we are working together to retrieve more nets.

While we have already processed these nets and segregated them based on quality, type and colour, we are working towards upcycling/recycling these products in order to reduce waste and contribute to the circular economy.
